Floor Lamps

The main purpose of any lamp is to provide light. If you want to illuminate only a certain part of the room, floor lamps are the right way to go. Of course, the strength of light and the surface of illumination will differ, depending on the materials used for the shade, shape and light bulbs used. We usually place floor lamps by the sofa or in the corner of the room, as those are the areas that benefit most from partial illumination.

Which Materials are Best for Standing Lamps

Different styles of lamps are made from different types of materials, however, that is not always the main reason for the superiority of one over the others. The most common ones are wood and metal, which are used because of their distinctive features.

  • Lamps with wooden construction.  Wood is a strong yet quite stiff material popular for its aesthetics. Beautiful grain and knots wonderfully complement various décor styles and work best in natural finish. It is mostly used for lamps which are characterized by simple shapes and straight lines, such as tripods. Wood is most often used to build geometric structures characteristic for minimalist style.
  • Lamps with metal construction. Metal is more versatile when it comes to creating more complex shapes. It is easier to work with than wood, because of which is used for creating curved, arched or cage bases. It can also create beautiful spirals characteristic for the glamour style. Not only that, but it usually features metallic finish like gold, copper or silver, however, can be also painted black, white or any other colour.

Types of Lamp Shades

Shades come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and like the base are made from different materials. Metal is used mainly for industrial lamps which give strong, direct light like in case of a spotlight. Fabric shades gently distort the light, giving a mellow radiance which creates a cosy atmosphere. When it comes to shapes, shades are very versatile and come in different forms. They can be classified either by their geometric shapes or designs. Novelty shades will even resemble spirals, flowers, cages, animals or more abstract concepts.

LED Floor Lamp

Floor lamps may differ also in terms of the source of light. Traditional light bulb lamps are more restricted in terms of design, where more traditional shapes apply. They usually come with shades and offer simple shapes which go well with more traditional décor styles. LED lamps, however, come in different shapes and forms as LED stripes can be arranged in almost any way. Those are usually the glamorous lamps which boast curvaceous spirals and rings. It is worth to mention that the source of light in the latter is usually irreplaceable, and you may end up having to buy a new lamp while in case of the traditional ones, replacing a light bulb is a piece of cake.
