Wooden Beds

Every bedroom needs a bed – that’s a given. Wooden beds are often the most minimalist ones. They perfectly match a wide variety of modern décor styles - rustic, coastal or industrial to name a few. They often show the aesthetics of wood, but it’s not always the case. When choosing the right bed there are a lot of aspects that need to be considered, such as size, material and finish.

Engineered and Solid Wood Bed Frames

Another important aspect that needs to be addressed when choosing the perfect bed is the material. The name “Wooden Bed” might be a little misleading, as it may refer to both solid and engineered wood. Either is perfectly fine, however, there are some differences that should be considered.

  • Solid Wood Beds are the more expensive ones of the two. They are made, as the name suggests, from wood planks. The woods usually used in beds are rubberwood and pinewood, characterized by their strength, durability and longevity.
  • Engineered Wood Beds are usually less expensive than solid wood beds, however, that does not mean they won’t last. They are usually made from MDF, or medium-density fibreboard, which is constructed from wood fibres strengthened and bonded with wax and resin. Pressed under heat, it is both very durable and easy to work with thanks to its smooth surface. It is much easier to apply all kinds of finish to MDF, so beds made from engineered wood come in a wider range of options.

What is the best finish for beds?

Well, that would be the one that suits you best. There are a lot of options to choose from, however, the finish may also depend on the material the bed is made of. Natural, veneered or painted, all wooden beds have their own, unique charm, so you will surely find the perfect one in a blink of an eye.

  • Natural Finish is characteristic for solid wood beds. It comes in mat or gloss (thanks to a thin layer of lacquer), it exposes the natural appeal of wood. The grain and knots beautifully complement rustic and industrial interiors, granting them a raw look.
  • Veneer Finish comes in two options. Wood veneer is a thin, yet durable layer of solid wood applied to the surface of MDF for as natural look as possible. Synthetic veneer is purely synthetic, however, it comes in many more variations. It may imitate wood, concrete, stone or any other material giving more options to choose from.
  • Paint Finish is the least expensive of all. They come in gloss and mat and offer an unlimited number of colours to choose from. They may cover the bed utterly or allow for the grain and knots to strike through for a bit of a natural aspect.
